Manage Test Case Results

Print this topicEmail this topic

A test case result is a record of the outcome of a test case. Test cases are often executed multiple times during the development cycle, and each test case result should be documented to assist in evaluating the state of the test case. The goal of test cases is to reach a passing state.

Managing test case results includes the following:

Create a test case result

You can create a test case result from several locations. This flexibility allows you to progress through work activities and create a test case result whenever you need it from logical positions within the Rally application.

From the Test Cases summary page

  1. On the Test Cases summary page, click the New Test Case Result icon New test case result in the row of the test case to which you want to add a result.
  2. On the Create Test Case Result editor, complete the fields as necessary.
  3. Click Save & Close.

From the Test Case Results detail page

  1. On the Test Case detail page, click the Results link in the sidebar.
  2. On the Test Case Results detail page, click Actions and select New Result.
  3. On the Create Test Case Result editor, complete the fields as necessary.
  4. Click Save & Close.

Edit or delete a test case result

You may edit or delete a test case result from any of the following locations:

From the Test Cases summary page

From the Iteration Test Case Status page

From the Test Case detail page

To edit a test case result on any of these pages:

  1. Click the Edit icon of the test case result you want to edit.
  2. On the Edit Test Case Results editor, complete your edits.
  3. Click Save & Close.

Concurrency conflicts may occur if multiple users edit the same defect. The first user to make their changes and save will have their changes committed. When subsequent users make their changes to the same defect then attempts to save, they are presented with an option to Review my changes or Overwrite with my version.

If you select Review my changes, you are returned to the defect editor so the changes can be copied and not lost. If you select Overwrite with my version, your changes are saved and the other users changes are overwritten. Overwrite with my version where attachments are added and edited will save both users' changes, as well as apply deletions.

To delete a test case result on any of these pages:

  1. Click the Delete icon Trashcan icon next to the test case result you want to delete.
  2. On the confirmation message, click OK.

Note: Test case results cannot be recovered from the Recycle Bin after deletion.

Test case result fields

The following fields are available to help you describe or add detail to a test case result. You can set these field values when creating or editing a test case result.

Required fields are highlighted in red on the full screen editor.

Field Description
Build Enter the number of the build that was tested.
Verdict Select the value that represents the result of your test execution: Pass, Fail, Inconclusive, Blocked, or Error.
