CA Agile Central Portfolio Manager: Portfolio Kanban Board enhancements

Quick actions

The Portfolio Kanban Board app has been updated to include a gear icon on each portfolio item. You can click this menu to quickly edit, copy, or delete a portfolio item. Choosing the Edit option will display a pop-up editor window, while the Copy option will immediately create a new portfolio item within the same column.

Gear menu

Custom queries

The Query field has been added to the app settings menu.

Query field

You may enter SQL-style queries into the field to filter the cards that display in the app. Queries are processed by the Web Services API.

To access the Query field, click the gear icon in the header of the app, then select Edit Settings.

Name and Owner inline edit

You may directly edit the Name and Owner field of each portfolio item on the board.

Inline editing

To edit the name of a portfolio item, click the text in the middle of a portfolio item when viewing the board. Press Enter, or click outside of the area to save your changes.

To change the owner of a portfolio item, click the owner icon in the header of the portfolio item. A drop-down will display. Select the new owner to save.

Enterprise Edition features:

Iteration Tracking Board app

With the new Iteration Tracking Board app, you can see team progress flow from state to state, as if viewing note cards on a wall or whiteboard.

Iteration Tracking Board

The app provides you with multiple features that allow you to plan, execute, and track an iteration from a single location:

  • Change the state of a work item by dragging-and-dropping
  • Inline edit the Name, Owner, and Plan Estimate fields of work items
  • View the cumulative status of tasks associated with each story or defect
  • View and edit essential details of associated tasks, directly from the board
  • Access full editors for user stories, defects, and tasks
  • Filter cards by owner
  • Mark work items ready
  • Mark work items as blocked
  • Add, copy, and delete work items

Click here to learn how to use all of the app's features.

Bulk edit work item fields

Bulk edit functionality available on the Backlog page has been enhanced to support more fields, and can also be accessed from detail pages and the Custom Grid app. With this set of features, you can edit most work items, including user stories, defects, tasks, test cases, test sets, and portfolio items.

Any work items that display on the Backlog or Portfolio Items pages may be bulk edited. Select the check boxes to the left of multiple work items of the same type, click the gear menu icon, and select Edit. A chooser will display with a list of fields that can be edited.

Bulk edit from Backlog

bulk edit

When viewing a list of associated work items from the details page of a portfolio item, you have access to the same grid layout found on the Backlog page. Use the check boxes and gear menu to edit details of a group of associated work items.

Bulk edit from portfolio item detail

The Custom Grid app may be used to find a select set of work items, which can then be edited in bulk. Use the app to edit the details of multiple defects, test cases, test sets, tasks, portfolio items, and more. Click here to learn more about using the Custom Grid app to collect a specific set of work items for editing.

Custom Grid bulk edit

Bulk parent or associate work items

In addition to bulk edit, a parent or associate option has been added to pages and apps with the grid layout. Using the Backlog page, detail pages of user stories or portfolio items, and the Custom Grid app, you can complete actions such as:

  • Assign or re-assign a parent to a set of user stories
  • Re-associate a set of tasks to a different user story or defect
  • Move a set of test cases to a new test folder

The option available in the gear menu will change depending on what type of work item you are editing. Click here for the full details and instructions on how to bulk parent or associate.

Project-level custom field visibility

You may control the visibility of custom fields at the project level. In the past, custom fields could only be set as hidden or visible for the entire workspace. Now you can control which teams have access to a field, and streamline the appearance of user story, defect, and other work item editors.

Visible section of editor

To support this new feature, we've updated the Fields summary page. You may access the page when viewing the details of either a workspace or project. Where you access the page from will affect the details of the data displayed.

Story Hierarchy app

The Story Hierarchy app is available in the app catalog.

Story Hierarchy

Story Hierarchy will make it easier for you to visualize and manage the relationships among parent and child user stories. With this app, you can:

  • View story hierarchies
  • Filter the top level of the hierarchy by workspace and project
  • Re-parent stories and tasks by dragging-and-dropping
  • Navigate to the detail page of a work item by clicking the FormattedID
  • Click the FormattedID to see the details of a story or task
  • Create child stories directly from the app
  • Edit, copy, or delete items directly from the app

Tasks in hierarchy

View active user licenses

On the Users page, the count of remaining seats now displays at the top. The count equals the remaining seats of all total seats.

  • Remaining = (paid seats + unpaid seats) - total active users
  • Total = sum of paid and unpaid seats
  • Remaining does not include disabled users

To view the remaining and total number of licenses, select the Setup link from the upper-right corner of any CA Agile Central page, then click the Users tab. The number of active licenses displays to the right of the New User field.

Active User Licenses

Keyboard shortcuts

Want to create a new user story, no matter what page you're currently viewing in CA Agile Central? How about a defect or test case? Now you can, with a new set of keyboard shortcuts.

Keyboard shortcuts

We've added three different types of shortcuts to the application:

  • Creation — Open a work item editor to create a new user story, defect, or test case.
  • Navigation — Move to the Backlog, Plan, and other pages without using your mouse.
  • View next in series — When viewing the details of an item in a release, iteration, or with a common parent, quickly move to the next work item in the set.

To see what shortcuts are available on a given page, press ? (shift + /) to bring up a list.

Blocked Reason and Ready fields

Two new fields have been added to CA Agile Central work items to assist with daily status updates. The fields are available for the following work items:

  • Task
  • Defect
  • Test Set
  • User Story
  • Defect Suite

Ready and Blocked Reason editor fields

The Blocked Reason field is a string field where users can document the details of an obstacle or issue.

Ready is a boolean field that can be selected when a work item is ready to move to the next stage of development. You can also filter by the Ready field in Custom Grid apps to quickly view a group of work items that are ready for review.

Does not contain operator (!contains) for custom views, notification rules, and Web Services API queries

When creating a WSAPI query, a custom view on summary pages, or a new notification rule, you can use the !contains operator to filter out work items that do not contain specific text. This operator is available for queries against string and text fields, including custom fields.

Does not contain operator

You may use !contains when creating a query in any supported version of the Web Services API.

Split story enhancements

Create a parent to connect two stories option

Creating a parent to connect two stories is now optional. The Create a parent to connect both stories option is selected by default on the story splitting screen. Simply un-check the option if you do not want a parent story to automatically be created to connect the two stories.

Release drop-down

The Release drop-down field is now available when splitting stories, allowing you to select from any current or future release for both unfinished and continued stories.

Release drop-down and parent option

Query Web Services with new variables and expressions

New variables and expressions are available for Web Services API queries, or when using the Query field in supported apps. Special date variables and expressions provide you with more power to express dates relative to today, as well as include or exclude items occurring at various distances in the past or future. Additionally, you can you can quickly filter by your username with the new syntax. When querying by a username, use currentuser. You must be logged into CA Agile Central to use this syntax.

To view Portfolio Items that are expected to start development in the next 30 days, you would write the expression as:

  • ((PlannedStartDate > "today") AND (PlannedStartDate < "nextmonth"))

If you wanted to view all stories that were accepted yesterday but exclude stories accepted today, the expression would be:

  • (AcceptedDate = "yesterday")

Click here to view more date variable examples.

To find all items you own, structure the query as:

(Owner = "currentuser")

Web Services API deprecation policy

In order to support developer toolkits, custom apps, and queries more effectively, we are introducing a formal deprecation policy to the Web Services API. With the new policy, we will make commercially reasonable efforts to support older versions of the WSAPI for one year after a new version is released.

Versions 1.0 through 1.36 of the WSAPI will enter this one year deprecation period on October 1st, 2012. These versions will no longer be supported after October 1st, 2013.

The current version of the WSAPI, 1.40, is fully supported. Its one year deprecation period will begin on the date that version 2.0 is released. You may review the full deprecation policy in the CA Agile Central Web Services API documentation.

View and add discussions on board apps

You may review and add discussions to work items displayed on the Iteration Tracking Board and Portfolio Kanban Board apps. Click the gear icon in a card's header and select Discussion to open the details display.

If discussions are already present on a work item, an icon will display, indicating the total number of comments.

Known issues in Release 2012.4

Not all work items may be recovered from the Recycle Bin

Only user stories, portfolio items, defects, test cases, and tasks are recoverable from the Recycle Bin.

Dragging test sets into the backlog on the Plan page

Dragging a test set from an iteration into the backlog on the Plan page will appear to make the test set disappear. The test set is still in CA Agile Central, but it has become unscheduled. To view the test set, go to the Iteration Status page and choose an iteration drop-down value of Unscheduled.

Popup blockers and CA Agile Central

Be aware that some of CA Agile Central’s content is displayed using popup windows. Popup blockers may inhibit this functionality. To correct this, configure your popup blockers to allow CA Agile Central popups.

User story list view displays incorrect summaries when parent stories are shown

Users who have both parent and child stories visible in the List (flat) view on the User Stories page will see summaries at the top of the list that combine parent and child estimates. We are considering fixing this by only showing child stories in this view, and would appreciate your feedback.

Iteration Defect Status printed report shows incorrect totals

The default settings for “Print Report” on Iteration Defect Status work correctly. However, if you deselect “show nested items” the report will indicate that all stories have “no defects”, even if some do. To work around this, make sure you keep “show nested items” checked when printing this report.

Custom Timesheet Reports will display "No Entry" where a custom field should be if CA Agile Central artifact is deleted

If you run a Custom Timesheet Report that includes deleted data, the output will include "No Entry" instead of a custom field name for any deleted work items.

Pasting formatted text from MS Word may result in error

Copy-pasting rich-format text into a work item editor from Microsoft Word may result in formatting or system errors. To work around this issue, compose directly in the CA Agile Central work item editors, or convert your entry to plain text before pasting.

Salesforce.com Integration: Create defect function does not instantly respond

The create defect function found in Salesforce does not immediately provide feedback from the associated CA Agile Central subscription. This may result in the inadvertent creation of multiple defects. Click the button only once to avoid this issue.

LDAP timeout recovery populates wrong username

After a timeout due to no activity, the recovery prompt will populate the CA Agile Central username instead of the LDAP username. Instruct users who experience a session timeout to enter the correct LDAP username to log back into the subscription.
